Weight Loss Medicines: Wegovy and Mounjaro

What are they?

Wegovy and Mounjaro are new medicines that can help people lose weight.

They are approved by the NHS for people who are very overweight or have obesity.

How do they work?

  • These medicines help you feel full sooner and for longer.
  • They are used alongside healthy eating and physical activity.

How can I get them?

Wegovy (semaglutide)

  • Only available through specialist weight management services.
  • Your GP cannot prescribe this medicine.
  • You must be referred by a specialist when services are ready.
  • You will also get support with diet and lifestyle changes.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

  • May be available through some GP practices, but only for people who:

    • Have a BMI over 40, and
    • Have four or more of the following health conditions:
      • Type 2 diabetes
      • High blood pressure
      • Heart disease
      • Obstructive sleep apnoea
      • Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)
  • Not everyone will be offered this medicine.

  • You and your doctor will decide if it’s the right option for you.
